That said, the film is quite sweet, albeit in an overstated, sickly way. Make the most of him, Hollywood Sidney Poitier is still a great actor and this film is a demonstration of his skills.
Here he is a carpenter touched by his tough life, which taught him to work as much as possible without hurting anyone. But one day some people wanted to take him away of his land and the tragedy started for him. However he took it as part of life and fought against it with patience and showing himself calm. The morale of the film is simply excellent. He lives on a farm by himself. He loves being left alone, and loves his work. That has kept him young.
She also bakes very good pies, which the entire town likes, especially Noah. Noah does not want to sell it. Developer, Christian Nelson, wants his girl friend to declare Noah incompetent in order to get the land.
In the process, the psychiatrist decides that people should have a life style as simple as Noah. She defends Noah and in the process they become friends.
Valerie Crane goes to the farm where she was born and raised to get the feeling for the simple life, and dumps her boyfriend. I watched the movie and enjoyed it very much, perhaps because I have made the decision to live a simple life and do what I love to do. Sidney Poitier portrays a simple man but charming and elegant man. Ellie 7 March Noah is a carpenter who lives on 35 acres that a big real estate giant wants to build one of their cheesy malls on.
This man effects people in one of two ways, either their lives are changed forever or they just don't get it. You feel sorry for the ones that don't get it but not very sorry.
Sidney Poitier is as hauntingly charismatic in this film as he was in "Lilies of the field" the first time I saw him in films. This is a good film to relax and enjoy and ponder how beautiful the earth is and how wise Noah is.
This was one of the better movies I've seen this year. What a positive, up-beat, feel-good movie. It was refreshing to see great movies are still being made, even though they unfortunately are not box-office hits and you usually have to turn over a few stones to find them.
I would have to say that after watching this movie, I thought it was okay. It wasn't great but it wasn't that bad. It's a simple movie about a carpenter who lives alone in solitude without using electricity or modern machinery. He's 91 but looks younger because of his years of hard work and dedication. His life takes a turn when a company wants to forcefully buy his land.
Noah, along with a friend Dianne Wiest must fight to keep them away. But one of the workers Mary Louise Parker sees beyond everything and becomes involved in the life of Noah. The ending was okay and even though I though it could've been better, the movie was fairly acted and worth watching just once. Love this movie and have seen it a number of times. A great story of giving by a solitary man in a small town. Enjoyed mary louise parker as well.
Noah just wants to be left alone and the people around him gives him support in his time of need. The Simple Life of Noah Dearborn is an eloquent story told in the most basic of terms. Sidney Poitier portrays Noah, who at 91 still leads an active though unfulfilling life. He stays busy every waking hour and has virtually no life outside his daily labor. He keeps potential friends at arms length, but goes out of his way to be a good neighbor. His routine varies little from day to day and he is haunted by the unsettling events of his early life.
Unknown to Noah, a group of investors have targeted his land as a potential site for development. Noah rejects their initial efforts to purchase his land outright, so they hatch a scheme to have him declared incompetent so he will be committed and removed.
Valerie Crane Mary-Louise Parker , a clinical psychologist will be their weapon. But like everyone else who comes in contact with Noah, she is touched by his openness, honesty and simple philosophy. She becomes his ally and defender. After contacting several of the townspeople she realizes how positively Noah affects the lives of those around him, despite his inability to show open affection toward them.
Noah is soon taken into custody for an forced evaluation based on sham allegations, but the effort is sabotaged by Dr. The Developers then try harassment in an effort to drive Noah off his land.
Valerie is injured trying to halt their plot and Noah comes to her rescue. While visiting her in the hospital Noah at last begins to drop his emotional block against those who love him. He finally allows Sarah McClellen Dianne Wiest , who has had a decades long crush on him, to get close. Because of all the opposition, the investors abandon their plans and the new Noah will live a new, fuller life.
The film is very effective in showing how love, friendship and understanding is so much more important than money, career and greed. Poitier is well cast and very effective as Noah who is content to live a simple, uncomplicated life. Decent TV-movie, but it's unrealistic and this is not my type of movie anyway. There are very few if any Hallmark movies that I enjoy, because, again, it's not my favorite genre of movie.
Sidney Poitier plays a 91 year old local carpenter and legend, Noah Dearborn who is still in good health and is always working.
